SS8TOR : good evening to all
Sk8Cols : welcome to the figure skating forum - adult
skaters/adult nationals is the topic
Sk8Cols : Good evening to you too :-)
JoAnneSK8 : Hi, folks!
Sk8Cols : JoAnne, any rumors of where adult natls will be?
SS8TOR : Be sure to check the Mike Weiss file, good stuff
collected for his fundraiser
Sk8Cols : This guy must have the biggest fan club that ever
lived
JoAnneSK8 : I've heard Lake Placid, Colorado Springs, Las Vegas
and Seattle. Boston has bid too.
Sk8Cols : I think Winterhurst (Cleveland) did also
SS8TOR : You can bid if you like through e-mail
SS8TOR : and his fan club is huge
Sk8Cols : to whom
JoAnneSK8 : I heard they want a site with two ice surfaces to
shorten the week and accomodate more people
Sk8Cols : yes, and they are worried about the adults at
altitude
SS8TOR : if states in the file I think MWeiss1
Sk8Cols : thanks! are you an adult skater?
JoAnneSK8 : My vote would go to Lake Placid because they've got
four rinks and hotels in walking distance.
JoAnneSK8 : I am. anyone else?
Sk8Cols : welcome to the figure skating forum
Sk8Cols : me, Mary
SS8TOR : yes,I'm taking my pre-prem July8
Sk8Cols : tonite's topic is adult skaters/adult natls
Sk8Cols : good luck on the prepre
JoAnneSK8 : Good Luck! Freestyle or moves in field?
Sk8Cols : we are gossiping about potential sites for next
year's adult nationals
SS8TOR : Thanks,Hope I don't need it Moves in the Field
Sk8Cols : for those of you who just came in
Sk8Cols : welcome to the figure skating forum
JoAnneSK8 : More power to you! I'm sticking with the Adult Tests
for now. No Moves! I do figures instead.
Skate Doc : Hi all
Sk8Cols : what is anyone testing/competing this summer?
SS8TOR : I take edge classes and the Moves are easier for me
SS8TOR : I skate at Fairfax and all the adults that went to
nationals had a great time
Sk8Cols : I will take preprelim and prelim moves, maybe
juvenile
Sk8Cols : I thought nationals were great
JoAnneSK8 : Silver Figures I hope. Maybe Pre Juv Moves. I'm
getting new music so when I'll compete is open.
Sk8Cols : I am doing skate detroit, that is all so far
TCB 77 : Whats going on in this room?
Sk8Cols : skating discussion
Sk8Cols : scheduled forum
SS8TOR : I finally picked my music for the adult bronze, hope
to test in the fall
TCB 77 : ice skating
Sk8Cols : neat - what music?
JoAnneSK8 : I'd like to do the Cranberry Open down onCape Cod
again. I had a great time last year.
Sk8Cols : my friend Shere Everett does that one
SS8TOR : A jazzy rendition of Moon River,I'm a Sinatra fan!!!
JoAnneSK8 : Yes, I remember her. She's in Senior.
Sk8Cols : I am a Yanni skater :-)
Sk8Cols : welcome to adult nationals/adult skaters discussion
Sladesk8n : ihey
Sk8Cols : what makes you choose to compete in a particular
competition?
Sladesk8n : so all of you are adults?
JoAnneSK8 : At Prov. Nationals several people skated to Yanni.
One of the kids at my rinks does now and I keep
Sk8Cols : I am 33
SS8TOR : Marge,I just posted a note about Mike Weiss T-shirts
JoAnneSK8 : looking for Shep Clark!
Sladesk8n : i'm 22
Sladesk8n : shep clark's cool
SS8TOR : I'm to old to say!!!!!
Sk8Cols : I have a shep clark autograph!
JoAnneSK8 : I'm - ahem - older than you all.
Sk8Cols : the other two ladies in my club who went to adult
nationals were both 47 years old
Sladesk8n : well, they're younger than my mom
JoAnneSK8 : My friends are 38 to 55 and we had a great time.
Sk8Cols : seriously, how do people at your rink react to adults
competing and testing
Sladesk8n : so, this is my first time in here, what do you
discuss?
JoAnneSK8 : Next time I see Shep I'll tell him.
Sk8Cols : weekly topics vary, this is adult nationals/adults
skating
Sladesk8n : as far as adults go, I think it's great that there
are a lot of adults skating
JoAnneSK8 : Adults go pretty far!
Sk8Cols : can you see yourself jumping and spinning when you
are over 50?
Sladesk8n : i do
JoAnneSK8 : Sure! I tell my coach I'm her retirement plan!
Sk8Cols : I thought I would freestyle until I got too old but
then I saw some really great 50+ skaters
Sk8Cols : besides, my ice dancing is nothing exactly to fall
back on!
JoAnneSK8 : Ritter Shumway skated into his '80s
Sk8Cols : last time someone said that the Protopopov's should
reinstate!
Sladesk8n : when did most of you start?
Sk8Cols : I started when I was 27
JoAnneSK8 : I was 28
Sk8Cols : don't be shy, jump in the rest of you....
Sladesk8n : do you ever feel intimidated by younger skaters?
SS8TOR : I plan to continue.I am working on my axle.Got it
rotated,but not landed Can't quit till I
Sk8Cols : welcome to the figure skating forum
SS8TOR : get it!!!
SS8TOR : I started at 35!
Sesti : What's the discussion?
Sk8Cols : sometimes younger skaters make me feel frustrated at
myself
JoAnneSK8 : Re: axel ame here. I get up but not around. The
story of my life :)
Sk8Cols : adult nationals, adults skating/competing
Sladesk8n : i get pretty frustrated, especially when i know i can
do it, but it never comes right
Sk8Cols : our kids have gotten used to me competing and it also
makes it easier for them when they have me as a
SS8TOR : I think itso great when the kids with doubles and
triples clap for me on my singles
JoAnneSK8 : The kids are pretty good now. I've been there longer
than any of them. But the parents now...
Sk8Cols : judge
Sk8Cols : I have pretty cool parents
JoAnneSK8 : At least they know the judge can skate!
Sk8Cols : uh, not exactly!
SS8TOR : I get much encouragement for the little ones,I feel
most of them realize that it is more
Sk8Cols : they realize that I want to be there, and that I am
taking vacation time to judge them
SS8TOR : difficult for adults
Ksqu : anyone from PA?
Sk8Cols : nope, Ohio
Sesti : Missouri, here.
SS8TOR : Virginia
Sladesk8n : california
AMYL2 : Arizona
JoAnneSK8 : Massachusetts
Sk8Cols : pretty diverse group!
Sladesk8n : wow, we're so statewide
Sk8Cols : Do you compete, would you compete, what would it take
for you to compete?
JoAnneSK8 : I do and enjoy it.
Sladesk8n : I think I might want to go to the adult level when I
become one
Ksqu : thanks everyone
AMYL2 : I don't compete, I won't compete and it would take a
serious blow to the head to get me to
Sladesk8n : that is fit the criteria of being over 25
AMYL2 : compete. I admire you all so much! I could never take
the stress
Sk8Cols : anyl2, do you test?
AMYL2 : yes, I did once and I have another July 1
SS8TOR : I'm starting to compete because of my pro.I trust her
Judgemant and she says I'm ready
JoAnneSK8 : There was discussion about an 18-24 year old group
but it wasn't too popular
Sladesk8n : that doesn't surprise me
Sk8Cols : we need one to keep the teenagers interested
Sesti : Anyone who started skating later than childhood, how
difficult was it to get started? I'm
Sesti : considering it.
Sk8Cols : my college kids have no where to go
SS8TOR : However,I might get too nervous,but at least I'll
give it a shot.
JoAnneSK8 : Intercollegiate competitions happen here
SS8TOR : I started at 35
Sk8Cols : i started at 27, just signing up was the hard part!
Sladesk8n : kind of difficult, but I find the "no fear" attitude
works
AMYL2 : I started at 31
Sladesk8n : I'm the young one I started when I was 20
Sk8Cols : how do parents, spouse, coworkers feel about you
skating?
SS8TOR : I saw 75 year old ice dancers and then signed up for
pre alpha!!!
JoAnneSK8 : For me the main goal is "fun"
Sesti : I skated a little as a child, but never got past
Beta. It's been so long that I've
Sesti : forgotten everything!
Sladesk8n : my "spouse" hated me for it, in fact he broke up with
me because of it
SS8TOR : My husband upped our medical insurance policy!!!
Sladesk8n : but my parents and friends totally encourage me for
it
Sk8Cols : yes, I lost a fiancee over this
JoAnneSK8 : Parents thinks it's great, don't have a spouse,
coworkers don't care.
Sladesk8n : men!!!!!!!!!!
Sk8Cols : but hey, he couldn't skate!
Sladesk8n : mine was an ice dancer
SS8TOR : My husband is so supportive as long as he can come to
the rink and watch the 'SkatingBabes'
Sk8Cols : ha ha
SS8TOR : Only kidding!!
Sk8Cols : we have a married adult dance team
Sk8Cols : who met on public skating
JoAnneSK8 : There's hope?
Sladesk8n : are there a lot of adult dance teams?
Sk8Cols : welcome to the figure skating forum
Sk8Cols : 23 senior adult teams at nationals
Sladesk8n : yikes...how hard is it to find a male partner
Sk8Cols : only 8 in the adult novice
JoAnneSK8 : What surprised me was the number of adult pair teams!
Sk8Cols : I think just coordinating two unmarried/uncoupled
adults is hard
Sk8Cols : ditto - there were 14 or 18 adult pair teams
SS8TOR : I enjoy goofing around at pairs. We sure have fun
trying throw waltz jumps
Sk8Cols : one of whom is on aol and should be here!
JoAnneSK8 : I'd like to try pairs but there aren't many male
skaters tall enough for me!
Sladesk8n : i want to compete in dance, but not enough male
partners here
Sesti : I don't think I'd have the courage to be a pairs
skater...
Sk8Cols : ISIA has couples which is freestyle oriented but no
lifts at lower levels
SS8TOR : The man I've yaken a few lessons with is about 6'4"
and in his 60's
Sk8Cols : there are 10 of us here right now - do you skate/test
ISIA or USFSA?
Sladesk8n : usfsa
JoAnneSK8 : USFSA
Sk8Cols : I am scaring off the lurkers
Sladesk8n : ha
Sk8Cols : one by one - I am usfsa with some isia also
JoAnneSK8 : Timid aren't they?
JLsk8tr : USFSA is behind the times.
Sladesk8n : i guess no one tests
Sladesk8n : isia sucks
Sk8Cols : what has your isia experience been like?
JLsk8tr : ISIA is purely recreational.
JLsk8tr : <<< good ISIA experience
JoAnneSK8 : I test. I used to do ISIA but didn't like being
judged by the instructors.
SS8TOR : What's wrong with ISIA.I think it's great
Sk8Cols : ditto here
Sladesk8n : boring and not a challenge especially when i was a
kid
CAESARMHS : heyyyyyyyyyyyyy
PIKEBTW : heyyyyyyyyy
Sladesk8n : plus, they don't teach you proper movements
Sk8Cols : welcome to the figure skating forum
CAESARMHS : hold on brent
JLsk8tr : I teach in both programs ... they're the same.
JoAnneSK8 : ISIA groups were too big. All adults in one class
regardless of level.
SS8TOR : It's for people who just want to have some fun,Not a
skating career
CAESARMHS : lets go to the bleachers
Sladesk8n : that's true
JLsk8tr : I have 5 adults or fewer in my groups.
CAESARMHS : no one is there
Sk8Cols : I think there are variations within both in terms of
goals, etc
PIKEBTW : where is that
SS8TOR : I was always grouped with my level
CAESARMHS : one up
Sk8Cols : welcome to the figure skating forum
PIKEBTW : okay
JLsk8tr : Goals are slightly different ... levels are quite
similar.
Sk8Cols : topic/adults skating/adult nationals
Sladesk8n : i guess i say this because my coaches now are better
teachers, than when i was in isia
JLsk8tr : ISIA's rec. prgm is more organized.
Sk8Cols : we have higher standards at our rink for our usfsa
pros
Sladesk8n : so does ours
Sk8Cols : many of our skaters can get hired at the local isia
rink with no tests to speak of
SS8TOR : My two pros at Fairfax couldn't be better
JoAnneSK8 : Same here. Local ISIA has kids teaching adults!
JLsk8tr : USFSA pros ... ISIA pros ... there is no distinction
around here in NJ.
JLsk8tr : I'm just a pro.
Sk8Cols : my pro has her golds in dance, patch, free and her
ISIA dance 10, so I feel very lucky
SS8TOR : Where in N>J> do you skate?
JLsk8tr : Montclair, Chimney Rock, Bayonne, South Mountain,
Mennen
JoAnneSK8 : MY USFSA coach teaches ISIA but not to me. I like the
standards of USFSA better.
Sesti : Would you recommend a new skater start with ISIA or
USFSA?
Sladesk8n : usfsa
Sk8Cols : wow - keep track of those miles for the irs
Sladesk8n : that is if your serious
JLsk8tr : Either one ... the programs are very similar.
Sladesk8n : if you just want to do it for fun-isia
Sk8Cols : I would recommend starting with whatever is run by
the strongest program in your area
SS8TOR : What is the closest rink to Mountainside(union
County)?
Sk8Cols : for the basics
JLsk8tr : SS8TOR ... Mennen Arena, I guess. (Morris Plains)
Sk8Cols : how much do those of you who skate practice?
Sesti : Have to find out where which one is taught, first...
Sladesk8n : 9 hours
Sk8Cols : a day?
JoAnneSK8 : 5 to 7 hours a week almost year round
SS8TOR : Thanks,now I'll know where to go when I go home
AMYL2 : I get VER, VERY little time to skate. I am always
having babysitter problems!
Sladesk8n : no, in a week...three hours a day
Sk8Cols : i am around 10-14 hours
Sk8Cols : a week :-)
Sladesk8n : it sucks having a job and trying to skate
SS8TOR : 6 hours a week
Sk8Cols : yes, work makes it difficult
Sk8Cols : but my pro likes being paid!
JoAnneSK8 : Summers are rough. There's lot's of ice during the
day but not after work!
Sk8Cols : how many other adults skate at your rinks?
SS8TOR : It sure does,I'm known for my long,long,long
lunches!!!
Sladesk8n : i go in the wee hours of the morning, so there's only
two of us
AMYL2 : We have quite a few. As a matter of fact my rink is
the home of paula Smart and Kevin
JoAnneSK8 : 4 besides me But I was the first and only for a long
time.
AMYL2 : Anderson
SS8TOR : about 30 a day
Sladesk8n : but on sundays, they have a dance session and they're
a lot of adults
Sk8Cols : there are about 10 in my club who freestyle, another
10 who just dance
JoAnneSK8 : I was talking club ie. There are a lot of adults in
group programs and on public
Sk8Cols : kevin anderson used to skate in columbus
AMYL2 : JoAnne, you were the only one? That must have been
difficult
AMYL2 : Did he really?
Sesti : Thanks for the opinions, guys...gotta go...
Sladesk8n : bye
JoAnneSK8 : I looked younger then. People thought I was a kid.
AMYL2 : bye Sesti
Sk8Cols : yup, we met via email and have some mutual
acquaintences
Sk8Cols : thanks for coming sesti
SS8TOR : Night!
AMYL2 : Are you from the columbus area?
Sk8Cols : yes, that is why the SK8COLS
Sladesk8n : is there any sort of mailing lists for figure skaters
in the internet
Sk8Cols : yes there is a list
AMYL2 : I will have to give him an AOL disc and tell him you
are here.
Sladesk8n : where
Sk8Cols : skaters@vger.rutgers.edu
Sladesk8n : what does it entail
Sk8Cols : to subscribe use majordomo@vger.rutgers.edu
Sk8Cols : and email them the message (no subject) subscribe
skaters
SS8TOR : I'm lucky to find this room!!
Sk8Cols : the mail comes in digests, 1-3 per day
Sladesk8n : cool
AMYL2 : Was is hard to find SS8TOR?
Sk8Cols : some of the same people who are on
rec.sport.skating.ice.figure
SS8TOR : not really,I'm computer illiterate
Sladesk8n : hi
Sk8Cols : welcome to the figure skating forum
Sladesk8n : bye
Sk8Cols : the rec.sport group and mailing list are good
Sk8Cols : bye
Sladesk8n : oh no not me
JoAnneSK8 : I understand I've been misquoted there.
Sk8Cols : in what regard?
Sladesk8n : so is competing in adults, just as "catty" as when
kids compete?
JoAnneSK8 : People said I said things I didn't.
Sk8Cols : no, not at all
Sk8Cols : re catty adults, that is
JoAnneSK8 : It can be. Depends on the people.
Sladesk8n : that's real cool..skating parents can be the worst
somethimes
JoAnneSK8 : I know a couple adults who skate for blood!
Sk8Cols : I think the adults are at so many different levels
that it is hard to get catty
Sladesk8n : is it real supportive
Sk8Cols : usually supportive
Sk8Cols : adult nationals was great in that respect
AMYL2 : Hi gotta go, 'night all!
JoAnneSK8 : It was at Nationals. I've never heard so many people
cheering me on, even those in my group.
Sk8Cols : good night - happy skating
SS8TOR : very supportive.everyone has such time constraints
Sladesk8n : see ya
SS8TOR : night!
JoAnneSK8 : Anyone else do figures besides me?
Sk8Cols : sometimes i feel funny at competitions where there
aren't a lot of adults
Sladesk8n : no
Sk8Cols : i have done figures, have my prelim and isia 1
SS8TOR : nope
Sladesk8n : anyone in here, male?
Sk8Cols : started judging, realized how bad my first test was!
Sk8Cols : female here
JoAnneSK8 : female
Sk8Cols : great men in my club
Sladesk8n : cute?
Sladesk8n : young?
JoAnneSK8 : Single?
Sk8Cols : normal, nice guys
Sladesk8n : balding?
Sk8Cols : married or playing on the other team
JoAnneSK8 : short, too, I'll bet.
Sk8Cols : as we say in Columbus
Sk8Cols : all sizes
Sladesk8n : most of the men around my rink are all into
hockey...thanks to the sharks
Sk8Cols : any harrassment of male figure skaters?
JoAnneSK8 : The guys here are short. Even the hockey palyers
Sladesk8n : i know my boyfriend used to get it a lot
JoAnneSK8 : The guys in my office hassle me - call me "tonya" and
"blades"
JLsk8tr : Not so much flack anymore.
JLsk8tr : When I was a kid, yes.
JoAnneSK8 : what did you do?
Sk8Cols : I find a lot of people are just interested and
looking to start a conversation, even a dumb one
SS8TOR : Offer to take them and watch them fall on their
butts!
Sladesk8n : got any ideas?
JLsk8tr : Ignore them.
Sk8Cols : there is a parent on aol whose son is quitting
because of hassles at school and he is a national
level
JLsk8tr : that's stupid.
Sk8Cols : ice dancer at the juvenile level
Sladesk8n : that's f**ked up
JLsk8tr : kids have to make fun of something.
JLsk8tr : he should just hang in there.
SS8TOR : That boy should talk to Mike Weiss,he has it together
Sladesk8n : we've gone through it all
Sk8Cols : easier said then done, of course - hard decisions
JoAnneSK8 : If he wanted it bad enough, he'd stay. Sometimes
they just lose interest.
SWClosset : Yo
Rlerblder : Yeah, I was called albino at school because I had
pale blonde hair and pale skin.
JLsk8tr : i went through it for years; i'm glad i stuck it out.
Sladesk8n : the younger guys i think get both slack and approval
around here
Sladesk8n : mostly approval
Sk8Cols : any adult skater/parent issues?
Sk8Cols : ie, adults are taking valuable ice time from the kids
JLsk8tr : yes, ineligible adults should be able to compete in
AN.
Rlerblder : Well, where I skate, there are quite a few figure
skating boys to old men skaters, which is nice.
Sk8Cols : which I have heard from others but never in Columbus
SS8TOR : How to convince your body it can do an axle!
Sk8Cols : there is always strength in numbers and the usfsa now
has seen the numbers of adults!
JoAnneSK8 : More hassles from some Judges!
Sladesk8n : well, now i have to go, but it was nice talkin' to
you all, i might come back next week!
Sk8Cols : what kind of hassles?
Sladesk8n : bye
Sk8Cols : please join us again
Rlerblder : Well, I just get on that RBO edge, get ready, and
launch.However, I still land on 2 feet. I'm 28 y/o.
SS8TOR : night
Sk8Cols : is it clearance or courage?
JLsk8tr : I can't land it on one foot either. I do a better
double flip or loop attempt.
JLsk8tr : It's a mental thing.
JoAnneSK8 : "Adults don't belong in competition." "Why don't you
try dance?" "Why bother testing at your age?"
Sk8Cols : can you think one leg shorter than the other to avoid
dropping your hip?
SS8TOR : I have enough height,but can't check the landing
Rlerblder : Yeah, it is. When I was 14, the AXEL was a BIG deal.
Adult skaters unite!
SS8TOR : Good tip
Sk8Cols : joanne, I have heard many of those things
JoAnneSK8 : I'm hoping Adult Nationals will help change things.
SS8TOR : I land on i foot with the other in the front and wipe
Sk8Cols : but mostly out and about
JLsk8tr : I'd rather get a double than hurt myself on the Axel.
Rlerblder : I get a lot of compliments on my skating from adults
and children. A coach gave me one 2 wks ago!
Sk8Cols : neat
JLsk8tr : Why not let ALL adults compete in Adult Nationals?
SS8TOR : Haven't tried a double yet,just started the axel
Sk8Cols : why not?
JoAnneSK8 : Oops. Gotta go. Work tomorrow. This is fun. It's
been nice talking to you all.
Sladesk8n : i actually haven't gone yet because i forgot to get
that e-mail address and i can't find it.
Sladesk8n : could you give it to me again? thanks
JLsk8tr : Doubles are easier I think.
Sk8Cols : goodnight
Sk8Cols : list is majordomo@vger.rutgers.edu
SS8TOR : Well,I have something to look foward to!!
Sk8Cols : send message subscribe skaters
Rlerblder : Yeah. Um, one suggestion is to do lots of back spins
on the R leg, and do a loop jump and check.
SS8TOR : night
JoAnneSK8 : Oh, can we make a list of competitions that include
adults? E-Mail me. SKATING will publish they said
JLsk8tr : Double loop is great for practicing air position.
SS8TOR : I'll try it
Sk8Cols : sure, i just made a list for southern eastern great
